Harness the power
In EMFD Global Focus, Volume 03, Issue 03, 2009, Eric Cornuel, EFMD Director General said: ìThe importance of coaching and mentoring for managers, leaders and organisations will continue to grow and while organisations have put much more thought and effort into the management of mentoring and coaching, there is still room for improvement in harnessing the power of both approaches effectively.

Coaching has emerged as a twenty-first century solution for the requirements of contemporary European leaders and managers. As a tailored and personalised intervention, coaching is increasingly used by organisations in support of executives and the business. Coaching recognises that the solution to a range of issues will lie within and can only be enacted by the individual. Supported by the Coach, the executive is helped to find solutions and apply them in the workplace. The focus on the individual as well as the organisation provides added-value particularly in the development and retention of talent.

Nottingham Business School’s Executive Coaching enables the development of talent, for example developing strategic thinking, whilst also linking to organisational goals, for example increasing the quality of work. In addition, through its Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Coaching Practice, Nottingham Business School can also support managers to harness and embed the power of coaching within their organisation.

Develop your managers
Effective leadership is one of the major challenges organisations face in improving performance and driving and implementing change. The current unpredictable economic environment has made the issue of sustainability ever more crucial for organisations and it is critical that leadership capability exists at all levels.

A recent CIPD report (January 2010) suggests that organisations spend almost three times as much on senior appointments as they do on recruitment of other employees, reflecting a consensus on the importance of good leadership and/or the difficulties reported of attracting candidates for senior positions. It is therefore not surprising that the report also suggests that more organisations will be focusing on developing talent in-house and retaining rather than recruiting new senior staff.

In response to these issues, and building on considerable experience of delivering in-company degree programmes, Nottingham Business School has launched an MSc in Management and Leadership. Created to prepare and facilitate the transition of middle and high potential managers into strategic and leadership roles, also included are corporate electives allowing customisation of the programme to reflect particular interests of the organisation or sector.

A staged award by block delivery, the programme distinguishes between the requirements of different levels of managers and ultimately aims to develop potential leaders who can advance their vision, set out goals and champion and implement change in a range of demanding business environments.
