For Juan Carlos Baumgartner, sustainability has always been intertwined with architecture. Since the celebrated architecture firm Space was founded in Chicago in 1999, it has expanded internationally and now has offices in more than a dozen countries. Baumgartner, who has a self-professed obsession with functionality and aesthetics, now focuses the bulk of his efforts on using architecture to serve a social purpose. Through its ‘hybrid methodologies’ approach, Space uses the latest discoveries in neuroscience to explore how a physical space can influence an individual’s state of mind by prompting them to use their body in different ways.
